Great piece - my dad never let me win a one on one basketball game against him in my life. I was 17 when I finally beat him fair and square. One of the best days of my life 😂
Haha as the father of two girls I have NO idea what to do. But if they were boys I’d be no different (I think?). In an ideal world you have one parent who tells you “you will always be enough” (I love you no matter what) and another who tells you “but you could be better” (you aint shit until you prove it). At least thats how I see it. Regardless, keep the thoughtful pieces coming!
Absolutely gorgeous essay. That first paragraph had me hooked. Kyrie's career is one of my favorites. The different person who has grown to and from and away from and back to...it's simply just remarkable to see someone so human. As a Celtics fan, the Kyrie hate truly breaks me. This man has nothing but a heart of gold. I think a huge part of the Luka to Lakers trade that hurt so much was the Kyrie of it all. Kyrie has found his place in Dallas because of the people. And the people very much included Luka. That brotherhood remains, of course, but I can't help but wonder where those two would have gone. Anyway, I could wax poetic forever about Kyrie Irving, but I just want to say thank you for writing this thoughtful, tender piece. Ramadan Kyrie is back at it -- nothing but insane stats to come, I'm sure. I'll be catching him play the Bulls at the end of the month and be sure to return to the piece before the game :)
Thank you for going back a little to read this piece, Shivani! I love Kyrie’s ability to wear his heart on his sleeve. It’s equal parts brave and altruistic. I think we both just saw the injury occur in real time — Here’s to the him making a speedy recovery 🤍🙏🏽
This just became one of my favorite essays of yours
Thank you fam 🥲

Lmaooo. That's real. Basically a 17 year lesson. Why are dad's like this!? Thanks for reading!

As a father of girls who had a dad of tough lessons I am also absolutely clueless!
Think I'm gonna let my wife do the tough work and be the lovey doting father (that is until boys enter the picture, of course).
Bro, this touched me in ways I didn’t know it would. Felt like you were writing to me and for me- thank you.
This is good stuff. Thank you for sharing your work Cole!
Thanks for reading, my guy!
